Frequently Asked Questions
Is Dance Marathon fun?
YES!!! There is tons of free food that is donated by local businesses, a free Dance Marathon t-shirt, a Dance Marathon plastic cup, a video DJ, bands, performances of all kinds, games…and dancing of course! We are also visited by kids from Western Youth Network and families from Parent to Parent…those kids can move!
Do I really dance for 24 hours?
NO!!! For the 2010 Dance Marathon we will be dancing for 13.1 hours (like a half marathon). Dancers will meet the challenge of staying on their feet most of these 13.1 hours, but dancers get to do activities other than dancing throughout the event. Dancers get to sit at meals and during breaks and occasionally sit to watch a performance of some kind (dance, music, chair massages, improv comedy).
How do I raise all of that money?
We ask dancers to raise $240, which comes out to just over $18 an hour if you want to break it down. Raising $240 is easier than it seems! ACT coordinates a letter writing campaign for you where you simply give us the names and addresses of friends and family and we send them a letter telling what you are doing and asking them to donate if they are able. We also supply each dancer with a packet of tips and ideas for fundraising to help you on your way.
Am I going to be tired?
2010 represents the first year Dance Marathin will be 13.1 hours. The event will be on Saturday February 20th from noon until 1:06am. For most students this isn't an unreasonable amount of time on a Saturday. Though you may be a little tired it will be entirely worth it!!!
What do I need to bring to Dance Marathon?
We will provide each dancer with a packet of info on what to expect and what to bring, but here are some quick thoughts…DEFINITELY bring several pairs of shoes! Our veteran dancers report that this is the most important thing you can do when participating in Dance Marathon. Plan to rotate between your favorite pairs of shoes: tennis shoes, flip flops, sandals, clogs, etc. Often what feels comfortable in the first 6 hours may not feel comfortable in the last 7! We also recommend you bring a camera to capture amazing memories and an unending supply of positivity…Dance Marathon is challenging but worth every moment.
